Powerwall 3, the smallest listed size
Waiting past 31 Dec 2026 costs $600
One Powerwall 3 is about as efficient as a battery gets under the taper. A first expansion still adds roughly 60% of the base unit's rebate; a second adds under a third of what the first did, and a third adds little.

How the Powerwall 3 sizes land on the taper
All 13.5 kWh of a single Powerwall 3 earns the full STC factor. The first expansion adds another 13.5 kWh, of which only 0.5 kWh stays in the full band; the other 13 kWh earn 60%.
The second expansion (40.5 kWh in all) earns 15% on almost everything it adds. A third takes usable capacity to 54 kWh, past the 50 kWh limit, so its last 4 kWh earn nothing.
Tesla holds two listings with the same capacities: Powerwall 3 and Expansions with Backup Gateway 2 (BAT-659) and Powerwall 3 AC (BAT-998), both to 31 December 2027.
Other Tesla batteries on the list
The list classes the Powerwall 3 as an integrated unit, battery and inverter in one, with three inverter ratings (5, 10 and 11.04 kVA) all at 13.5 kWh usable. Expansion packs add battery only. No Powerwall 2 appears on the current list, so a Powerwall 2 can't claim the discount on a new install.
Before you sign for a Powerwall 3
- Ask which Tesla listing the quote uses: the Powerwall 3 with expansions, or the Powerwall 3 AC. The certificates are the same for the same capacity.
- If you are quoted three expansions, ask why: the last 4 kWh are beyond the 50 kWh limit and earn no rebate.
- Expansions added after the first install only qualify if the original Powerwall never claimed the discount, so buy the size you want in one job.
